X-Rays And Diamonds


University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)'s Department of Physics has received a three-year, $231,262 grant from the the U.S. Department of Energy to study the structure of rare earth materials to determine if the materials could have industrial applications.

Principal investigator Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D., will use a diamond-overlaid sensor to perform measurements in harsh chemical and mechanical environments. Sample materials will be placed between two designer diamonds created in a process patented by Vohra.

Then diamonds will be brought together to apply high pressure and a laser will create high temperatures.

Vohra says the sample material, under extreme temperatures and pressures, could change its properties and form a new material.
